The original Charles University building was established in the year1348. Carolinum is the oldest university building in Europe. The building is still in use. The Prague University was founded in the year 1348, by Charles IV., like the first place of higher learning in Europe. The university was divided into four faculties. There were faculty of law, theology-philosophy, medicine and the faculty of free art. At present, Charles University graduation ceremonies take place there. There is a gallery on the ground floor.
A Gothic bay chapel built in the year 1370 was rebuilt in Baroque style in the year 1718.
